How to Register for Praxis Test (2024)

The Praxis test is one of the qualifiers for aspiring teachers' certification. It assesses the academic skills and subject-specific content knowledge needed for teaching.

While preparing for this important exam, candidates may feel overwhelmed by the registration process and the exam itself.

In this article, we’ll provide all the relevant information needed for a smooth and successful Praxis test registration. We’ll also offer preparation tips to help ease the stress as you wait for your exam date.

What are Praxis Tests?

Praxis tests are a series of exams offered by the Education Testing Service (ETS). They are designed to measure the knowledge and skills of aspiring educators.

Praxis exams assess both academic skills and subject-specific content knowledge to ensure that prospective teachers meet the educational standards required for entering the teaching profession.

Many colleges and universities use Praxis exams as entry criteria for teacher preparation programs. Additionally, Praxis tests are often required for teacher certification and licensure in many states.

These exams ensure that future educators are well-prepared to impart knowledge to students and succeed in the classroom.

There are two main types of Praxis exams:

  •    Praxis 1 (Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators): This exam focuses on core academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. It is used as a requirement for admission into teacher preparation programs.
  •    Praxis 2 (Praxis Subject Assessments): This exam evaluates a candidate's knowledge of specific subjects they plan to teach and teaching skills and knowledge. Praxis 2 is taken by those who have completed their education program and are seeking licensure.

If you’re pursuing a career in education, performing well on these exams is essential because it helps you get licensed and builds your confidence as an educator.

Registering for the Praxis Test

There are three ways to register for a Praxis exam. You can register online, by phone, or by mail. Before we take you through the registration process for each method, there are factors you need to consider:

  •    Where to take the test: You can take the exam at home or at the testing center. Decide whether you prefer the convenience of taking the exam at home or the structured environment of a test location. Consider comfort, technical requirements, and potential distractions.
  •    The location of the test center: If you choose to take the exam in person, select a test center close to your home or work to minimize travel stress. Make sure to book early, as availability can be limited.
  •    How much time you need to study prior to your test date: Assess how much time you need to prepare based on your familiarity with the material, and create a study plan that allows for thorough preparation without last-minute cramming.
  •    How much time do you have to meet certification requirements?: Consider the deadlines for submitting your Praxis scores to meet state certification requirements, and plan your exam date early enough to allow for score processing and possible retakes.

Praxis Registration Deadlines

Most Praxis exams are available for online at-home testing, allowing test-takers to schedule their exams conveniently without needing to travel to a testing location. This option is particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules or far from testing centers.

If you choose to take the exam in person at a testing location, note that Praxis test dates and availability may vary. To find the most convenient testing location, refer to the ETS Praxis website, where you can search for test centers in your state, city, or zip code.

Testing availability fills up quickly, especially during peak times. Therefore, we recommend starting your Praxis registration early to secure your preferred test date and location.
